— To be fair, he [Tater] has a very difficult job, juggling the needs of parents, students, teachers! If you ask me, his administrative skills are... off the hizzle!

Mr. Younger Man is the fifth episode in Season 1 of Mr. Young.

Synopsis

Adam's old university buddy comes for a visit.

Overview

Adam is in the Science Lab using liquid nitrogen to create cherry slushies, which Derby samples and gets his mouth frozen, while Adam claims it's for his "college buddy" Sydney Finkelbaum, who is coming to Finnegan High to visit him. When Adam describes a time he had with Sydney, Derby concludes that Sydney is a nerd, only for the latter to show up as a gorgeous twenty-three-year-old girl, stunning Derby. After Adam introduces Sydney to Derby, he accidentally spills a canister of liquid nitrogen on his feet. While Adam begins showing Sydney around Finnegan High, Derby attempts to follow them but fails, causing him to break his frozen feet with a hammer.

In the school hall, Slab uses Derby to get him a candy bar in a vending machine, before Echo and Tater arrive, where the latter claims that he would soon be removing all the vending machines in the school, much to Slab's dismay. This is all because Tater intends to promote a healthy eating program in the school which Echo supports, only for the trio to then see Mrs. Byrne attacking the vending machine and inadvertently Derby.

That night at the Young House, Adam and Sydney are having pizza together when Derby shows up hoping to see Sydney, who decides to go sleep. After she leaves, Derby explains the events that happened with Adam and thinks she wants to be more than just friends with him. After Sydney returns to thank Adam for setting up her guest bed, Derby ultimately concludes that Sydney likes Adam.

At school the next day, Mrs. Byrne begins teaching her class about her favorite topic, the War of 1812, before Echo reminds her about teaching it repeatedly. Mrs. Byrne then decides to teach the class about Mahatma Gandhi, who she apparently used to babysit, and mentions a non-violent protest, confusing Slab (who thought she had said nun-violence) before Echo explains it to him. When Slab tries to rally the students to stop Tater from getting rid of the vending machines, Echo suggests Slab using a non-violent protest, leading him to chain himself to the vending machine; however, as long as Slab is chained up, Echo has to bully the nerds for him. Tater then arrives with some movers to remove the vending machine, only to find Slab all chained up, and immediately backs off upon Slab threatening him for making fun of his non-violence.

In the quad, Derby arrives and attempts to convince Adam to make a move on Sydney, who denies it as he claims to like Echo instead. She then walks by while Adam tries to talk to her, yet she just leaves him be. Sydney then arrives after falling onto Adam, and claims that she got tickets for her and Adam to a laser show at the planetarium, exciting Adam. When he accepts, Sydney leaves after hugging him saying "it's a date", leading Adam to conclude that Sydney likes him and Derby was right. Later, Tater attempts to convince Slab to leave, yet he still refuses. Meanwhile, the school nerds are seen walking with their underwear on their heads due to Echo bullying them in support over Slab's non-violence, and chases after another one Slab claims she missed.

In the Science Lab, Adam panics as he doesn't know what to do with a girl on a first date, so Derby attempts to demonstrate using his alter-ego Antoine Bolognese, by flirting and making out with a skeleton. Meanwhile, Tater tries to remove Slab from the vending machine, this time disguised as a rapper. He uses bolt cutters to try and cut the chains, but isn't strong enough to do so. Slab offers to help him, and cuts off Tater's pants in the process, causing him to flee in embarrassment. Back in the lab, Derby (as Bolognese) demonstrates his dance moves with the skeleton for about an hour, before prompting Adam to start making his move on the skeleton. However, as he begins to kiss it, Tater enters the classroom, and asks Adam to build him a stink bomb, although Derby begins to help him instead by showing his knowledge of stink bomb-making.

That night at the Young house, Derby helps Adam prepare by spraying him with non-stick cooking spray, which Adam assumed was cologne. As Sydney prepares to take him out, Derby instead stays behind to prepare roast chicken, which surprises Adam. Sydney, who forgot her purse, returns inside, only to then accept a phone call from someone who turns out to be her boyfriend, a torso model, stunning Derby. After she hangs up and leaves, Derby attempts to warn Adam, but hesitates upon realizing the chicken is ready, knowing it would dry out if he didn't eat it right away.

At the planetarium, Adam and Sydney take their seats, with Adam getting extremely nervous about being with Sydney as the show begins; she opens her purse to give him a tissue, only to find a leaf, which he hurriedly uses. Back in the school, everyone has gone home, except for Slab. Tater then arrives to convince him to leave for good, throwing a stink bomb at Slab when he refuses (despite failing to do it a couple of times). Slab is unaffected by the smell, however, being used to it, and retaliates by throwing one of his socks, which causes Tater to feel nauseous. Back at the planetarium, Derby fails to enter the auditorium due to it being locked, and instead runs towards the control room. During the show, Adam attempts to make his move on Sydney, though is slightly interrupted by Mrs. Byrne. In the control room, Derby unsuccessfully tries to get Adam's attention, but Adam is unable to hear him in the other side. He tries to warn Adam with the microphone, in code, to no avail. When this fails, Derby diverts the laser projectors but accidentally hits Adam in the eye with a laser, followed by him accidentally breaking the handle, causing the machine to go out of control and forcing Sydney and the crowd to flee.

The next day at school, Sydney arrives to see Adam with his face injured after the laser show (with small red stars and moons on his face). Adam begins to admit he believed he and Sydney could've been more than just friends, only to mention Derby telling him about Sydney's boyfriend. Sydney instead comforts him and calls him a great guy, though she disagrees with Adam taking advice on women from Derby. Adam then admits his feelings to Sydney that he has feelings for Echo, but that he thinks she doesn't think of him that way. Sydney then begins flirting with a confused Adam, though he manages to play along. When Sydney kisses him on the lips and runs away, Echo finally gets jealous and walks up to Adam, though he is too stunned by the kiss to talk to her. Echo walks away disappointed, while she sees Derby having a fight with his skeleton date.

Echo then sees Slab and Tater asleep in the hallway, waking them up with two megaphones. When the duo still continue their fight, Echo suggests a compromise of half-healthy food and half-candy, which the two men agree to. Later, Slab is shown to be enjoying his apple (which he calls a fruitball), while Tater struggles with using Derby in the vending machine to get the candy he needs.

Memorable quotes

Tater: Mr. Slabinsky... this is the last time you'll be doing that.
Slab: Oh, he [Derby]'s fine, he's got like three minutes of air left.

Derby: Well, in the words of Stephen Hawking... [robotic voice] that chick is so into you.

Adam: Maybe I can call one of my friends from the MIT science for advice. [grabs phone] No, he's never been out with a woman. Or him. Or him.

Adam: (to skeleton) Hey Syd! You look great tonight. The white of your clavicle really brings out your cheekbones.
Derby: Remember: look at her eyeholes, not her ribs. Girls hate that.

Adam: (coughing) What kind of cologne is that?
Derby: It's nonstick cooking spray. What? Women love the smell of butter.

Tater: (after smelling Slab's sock) Oh my. It's like a skunk married a dung beetle and their baby got a job cleaning port-a-potties at a chili festival.

Trivia

  • This episode reveals that Adam wore contacts until the laser fixed his eyes.
  • Echo's feelings for Adam are slightly revealed, as she gets jealous when Sydney flirts with Adam and eventually kisses him.
  • In the Disney XD airing of this episode, the scene where Tater comments on Adam kissing the skeleton is cut out.
    • Additionally, the scene where Adam and Sydney discuss scientists in the quad is shortened.
  • Derby briefly imitates Stephen Hawking when explaining Sydney's apparent crush on Adam.
  • Tater begins to admit he lives with his mother at the end of this episode, which would become a running gag in the series.
  • Echo only shares two scenes with Adam in this episode, and Slab does not interact with Adam at all.

Errors

  • Derby would've died inside the vending machine because he wouldn't of been able to breathe, and the coils could've impaled several parts of his body.
  • Additionally, he would have been fatally injured by the liquid nitrogen and lose his legs by breaking them.
  • Echo was sitting on the School Stairs with a friend, then got up and walked off, being flattered/complimented by Adam in the process. Then, Sydney arrived and fell on Adam by accident. This is followed by Derby getting pooped on by a bird, but Echo is shown sitting with her friend on the school stairs, looking at Derby from afar.

Allusions

  • Penguins of Madagascar- When Slab bullies Derby by putting him inside a vending machines, it's a reference to when Mort and Private are trapped in the zoo' vending machine in "When Chips are Down".
